Andoni Goikoetxea was an uncompromising Basque defender whose ferocious tackling earned him a fearsome nickname during Athletic Bilbao’s title-winning years of the early 1980s. Physically imposing and relentlessly aggressive, he was a cornerstone of one of the club’s greatest sides.

He helped Athletic to a league and cup double, and though his hard-edged style courted controversy, his competitive value to the team was never in doubt.
