Chris Waddle was a mercurial England winger whose loping running style, close control and ability to beat opponents made him one of the most watchable players of his generation. He shone for Newcastle United and Tottenham before a move to Marseille, where he flourished, helping the French side to league titles and reaching a European Cup final.
Blessed with balance and improvisation, he later returned to England and enjoyed a memorable spell at Sheffield Wednesday. For all his gifts, he is also remembered for a missed penalty in a World Cup semi-final shoot-out, a cruel footnote to a richly entertaining career.
