David Platt was a goalscoring midfielder with a gift for arriving in the box at the decisive moment, most memorably with a last-gasp volley for England at the 1990 World Cup. He made his name at Aston Villa before a successful move to Italy, where he played for Bari, Juventus and Sampdoria.
He later returned to England with Arsenal and captained his country. Intelligent in his movement and clinical in front of goal, he was one of the leading English midfielders of his time.
