Fabien Barthez was a flamboyant French goalkeeper whose agility and eccentric charisma made him one of the most recognisable figures of his era. He won the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000, keeping goal for a France side at the height of its powers.

At club level he starred for Monaco and Marseille, and spent several seasons at Manchester United. His shaven head, famously kissed for luck by teammates, became an enduring image of the period.
