Frank Rijkaard was a supremely versatile Dutch footballer, equally accomplished as a commanding midfielder or a composed defender. He came through at Ajax and became a central figure in AC Milan’s all-conquering side, forming part of a celebrated Dutch trio alongside Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten.
He scored the winning goal in the 1990 European Cup final and won the European Championship with the Netherlands in 1988. Elegant and unflappable, he later enjoyed success in management, guiding Barcelona to Champions League glory.
