Gilmar was Brazil’s goalkeeper during the golden era that conquered the world, a calm, positionally astute presence behind a team of attacking geniuses. He guarded the goal as Brazil won the World Cup in 1958 and again in 1962, an unflappable last line for two of the finest sides ever assembled.
At club level he was long associated with Santos, part of the celebrated team built around Pelé, and is regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers his country has produced.
