Giovanni van Bronckhorst was a versatile, technically assured Dutchman who could operate at left-back or in midfield. He rose through Feyenoord before a career that took in Rangers, Arsenal and Barcelona, winning honours in Scotland, England and Spain.
For the Netherlands he was a reliable and intelligent servant, captaining the side and playing in the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa, a run he lit up with a spectacular long-range goal in the semi-final. He later returned to Feyenoord as a title-winning coach.
