Graeme Souness was the driving force of Liverpool’s dominant side of the early 1980s, a midfielder who combined steel and subtlety in rare measure. He tackled ferociously, passed with vision and led by sheer force of will, controlling the tempo of matches from the centre.
With Liverpool he won a clutch of league titles and multiple European Cups, captaining the club to some of its greatest nights. A key figure for Scotland, he later moved into management, but it is as a commanding, uncompromising player that he is best remembered.
