Howard Kendall was a tireless, skilful midfielder who first made his name as a player at Everton and elsewhere in the 1960s and 1970s. Energetic and technically sound, he was part of a celebrated midfield trio at Goodison Park.
He is remembered above all for what came next: as Everton’s manager he built the club’s greatest side of the mid-1980s, winning league titles and a European trophy, making him a defining figure in the club’s history.
