Jack Charlton was a towering, no-nonsense centre-half who spent his entire playing career at Leeds United, forming the defensive bedrock of Don Revie’s formidable side. Uncompromising and shrewd, he won league and cup honours in a long and distinguished spell.
He was a member of the England team that won the World Cup in 1966, alongside his brother Bobby, and later became a hugely popular manager, taking the Republic of Ireland to major tournaments.
