John Barnes was a wonderfully skilful winger whose dribbling and balance made him one of the outstanding English footballers of his generation. After announcing himself at Watford, he joined Liverpool and became the creative jewel of a title-winning side, gliding past defenders and scoring goals of rare quality.

For England he produced one of the finest individual goals ever scored by a national-team player, a slaloming run against Brazil in the Maracanã, and he remains a cherished figure at Anfield.
