Mario Rigamonti was a commanding centre-half at the heart of the legendary Grande Torino side that dominated Italian football in the 1940s. Strong, brave and authoritative, he anchored a defence behind one of the greatest club teams the country has produced.
He was among those killed in the Superga air disaster of 1949, a tragedy that wiped out the team at its peak, and his name endures as part of that cherished and mourned generation.
