Pepe, born José Macia, was a Santos forward of the 1950s and 1960s whose fearsome left foot made him one of Brazilian football’s great scorers. A teammate of Pelé through the club’s golden years, he was renowned for the venom of his shooting and his mastery of the swerving free-kick.
He helped Santos to a remarkable collection of titles at home and abroad and earned selection for Brazil, remembered as a poacher and dead-ball specialist whose goals lit up one of the most celebrated club sides ever fielded.
