Peter Beardsley was a wonderfully inventive forward whose intelligence and close control made him a delight to watch and a nightmare to mark. He shone in two spells at Newcastle United, where he was adored, and also starred for Liverpool and Everton, linking play and scoring with equal ease.
For England he formed productive partnerships up front and appeared at major tournaments, valued for the way he could conjure something from nothing. Quick of thought and generous in his creativity, he embodied a craft-first approach to attacking football.
