Philip Cocu was a versatile and intelligent Dutch midfielder, equally comfortable dictating play or dropping into defence. He was a mainstay of a strong PSV Eindhoven side and also spent several seasons at Barcelona, where his tactical discipline and reliability made him a valued figure.
A regular for the Netherlands across major tournaments, he combined technical assurance with an unselfish work ethic, and he later returned to PSV as manager, guiding the club to further domestic honours.
