Richard Gough was an authoritative central defender and inspirational captain, best remembered for leading Rangers through their remarkable run of nine consecutive Scottish league titles. Strong in the air and assured on the ball, he marshalled the back line with a leader’s presence.

He also played in England before that defining spell at Ibrox, and won a substantial number of Scotland caps, captaining his country as he did his club. Few defenders of his era commanded a dressing room with such natural authority.
