Rudi Völler was a classic German centre-forward, a mop-haired striker whose bravery, movement and finishing made him one of the most respected marksmen of the 1980s and 1990s. He built his reputation with Werder Bremen before successful spells at Roma and Marseille, winning the Champions League with the French club in 1993.
A World Cup winner with West Germany in 1990, having also reached the final in 1986, he was a fixture of the national side across a golden period. He later managed Germany to a World Cup final, extending his influence on the game well beyond his playing days.
