Santiago Cañizares was an agile, sharp-reflexed goalkeeper who anchored Valencia through their most successful modern era, reaching successive Champions League finals and winning La Liga. Earlier he had won honours at Real Madrid, though he spent much of that spell as understudy.
A long-serving Spain international, he is remembered too for the freak accident that ruled him out of the 2002 World Cup when a dropped bottle of aftershave severed a tendon in his foot, handing Iker Casillas his opening.
