Simão Sabrosa was a skilful, direct left-winger with a fierce shot and a gift for set-pieces. He first drew notice at Sporting CP before crossing Lisbon to Benfica, where he became a talismanic figure, and later played for Atlético Madrid in Spain.
A long-serving Portugal international, he featured at multiple World Cups and European Championships during a golden generation for the national side.
