Steven Gerrard was one of the greatest midfielders England produced, a powerful, all-action player who could tackle, pass, drive forward and score from distance with equal ferocity. A boyhood Liverpool supporter, he spent almost his entire career at Anfield, becoming captain and the club’s emotional heart.
He is forever associated with the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul, when his goal and his leadership inspired Liverpool’s comeback from three goals down against Milan. He collected an FA Cup, a UEFA Cup and countless individual honours, though the league title famously eluded him.
Capped more than a hundred times by England, he later played in the United States for LA Galaxy before turning to management. His combination of drive, skill and loyalty made him a one-club icon in all but the final chapter.
