Mats Hummels was one of the finest German central defenders of his generation, a ball-playing centre-back whose reading of the game and range of passing set him apart. He rose to prominence at Borussia Dortmund, where he became captain, and also won league titles with Bayern Munich.

A World Cup winner with Germany in 2014, he combined defensive intelligence with the composure to build attacks from the back. Late in his career he added a European final appearance with Dortmund and a spell in Italy, respected everywhere for his elegance and leadership.
